At first light on June 1, in his 80th year, Ross Herwig of Pembroke found eternal peace. He was surrounded by his loving family and in the embrace of his beloved wife and children as the morning birds awakened in song, as if to carry him home.
David "Ross" Herwig is survived by his devoted wife and sweetheart of 61 years, Sharon (née Kaddatz), who was truly the centre of his world. He will be deeply missed by his children, who were his pride and joy in every sense of the word, Rodney (Lori Ann), Richard (Jennifer), and Shari Lynn (Allan) as well as his former daughter-in-law, Noreen. He was a proud and loving Grampa and Papa to Alex, Branden (Kassidy), Gregory, Cailey (Cameron), Beatrice, Katie, Sara, Andrew, Dawson, and Lucas, and a delighted Great-Grampa to Laken, Charlee, Renley, and Bodhi—each of whom brought him great joy and a deep sense of pride in his legacy of love. He is also survived by his sisters Janice (Chris) and Laurel (Margaret), whom he held close and cherished throughout his life as their loving big brother. He will be fondly remembered by his brothers-in-law Jim (Lois) and Carl (Bev), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of dear friends, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He was predeceased by his parents, Sydney & Mary Herwig (née Johnson).
Sharon was truly the heart of his world, and together they built a life rooted so deeply in devotion that extended through their children and remained so steadfast that they were by one another’s side through every trial and every celebration. They walked through life hand in hand with unwavering commitment, strength, and undying love. To know Ross was to gain a friend in the truest sense. He was a caring confidant when life needed to be shared, a partner in mischief when laughter was needed most, and a steady, warm presence that made others feel at home in his company. Ross carried a lifelong love of the outdoors, finding peace and purpose in hunting, fishing, trapping, trips through Algonquin Park, and the simple joy of a walk in the bush. He was equally passionate about hockey, a game that remained close to his heart throughout his life, both as a player, coach, and devoted fan. Over the years, he pursued many paths and careers, taking pride in his time as a potato farmer, as a trapper and in teaching the trapping course for the Ministry of Natural Resources, and in his work as a realtor. Above all, he took the greatest pride in his craftsmanship as a log home builder and handcrafted log furniture maker—work that reflected both his skill and his deep appreciation for natural materials and enduring craftsmanship. Yet his greatest life’s work was his family and friendships, and the rich collection of memories and stories shared and created throughout his wonderful life.
His family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care and kindness shown to him over the past two years by the staff of Miramichi Lodge—especially the incredible and cherished team on 1A, and all who helped bring him comfort, dignity, and joy in his final home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Rankin Culture & Recreation Centre on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., with words of remembrances starting at 3:00 p.m. The service will be made available virtually by clicking this link.
