Michael Ryan

d. May 11, 2020

Ryan, Michael - It is with heavy hearts we announce the death of Michael Patrick James Ryan who died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on May 11, 2020 at the age of 72 years.

Raised in Killaloe, Thunder Bay and Burlington, Mike’s dream as a young adult was to return to his roots by moving back to the Ottawa Valley, which he did in 1980. He made many long-time friendships over the years with colleagues during his career as a public servant in the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services, Renfrew County Social Services and the Superior Court of Justice.

Ever an outdoorsman, sportsman, rugby enthusiast and lumberjack, Mike was a family man first and foremost.  He was never without a good crime novel close at hand and spent as much time as possible at his beloved Buck Hill hunt camp when not maintaining the red pine plantation at the family home in Alice. Mike was Irish through and through, with an eloquent and often colourful gift of the gab, and always a twinkle in his eye. Companion and husband for 38 years of Janet (nee Lint).  Caring father of Padraic (Michelle Chandler) and Claire (Rachel Smyth).  Special Grandpa Mick to Desmond. Loving brother of Colleen (Tom Franey). Predeceased by brother and best friend Marty (Julie) and parents Martin & Margaret (nee Whelan). Mike will be missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Special thanks to Bayshore palliative nurses Sarah & Nick, oncologist Dr. Michael Ong, Dr. Uttley and Dr. Murray for their care of Mike as his health declined.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Pembroke Public Library, where Mike was an enthusiastic patron for 40 years and an active volunteer in his retirement, would be appreciated.

A celebration of life event will be held in Pembroke once it is safe to do so. Arrangements entrusted to the Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home, Pembroke.  Online donations/condolences are available at www.mdbfuneralhome.com.

May your heart be warm & happy

With the lilt of Irish laughter

Every day in every way

And forever and ever after.
