Passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on September 1, 2025 at the age of 78 years.
Kenneth “Kenny” Popkie of Alice, dearly loved by his companion the late Erika “Honey Bun” Rutledge and her children Mike Rutledge (Roselie Kane), Kingston; Bonita Rutledge (Scott MacGillivray), Pembroke; and Ramona Snair (Lee Snair), Hubbards NS. Cherished grandfather of Ryan MacDonald & Hannah MacDonald (Matt Huestis); and great-grandfather of Halle, Brody & Mora. Son of the late George and Henrietta “Nettie” Popkie (nee Noack). Brother to Marilyn (the late Neil O’Neill). Uncle to Tim O’Neill (Vina), California and Chris O’Neill, Calgary. Great-Uncle to Samantha and Dylan.
Ken Popkie founded Popkie Lumber & Sawmill with his late father in 1974, at its current location in Laurentian Valley. He’s known throughout Ontario as a great businessman. His property was always meticulously maintained and artfully decorated with lots of help from his faithful and loyal employees, ‘The Lads’, which he had so much love and respect for. He truly found “man’s best friend’ in his beloved dog Domo. Domo will miss his daily drives in the truck and their trips to Wendy’s for cheeseburgers. You could always hear Kenny, or ‘The Genius’ as he liked to refer to himself, making jokes and always having a sarcastic comeback, inappropriate or not, and his jovial laugh made it all ok. You could always catch his humorous radio ads on Valley Heritage Radio, which brought customers from near and far. Kenny was an avid collector of absolutely anything Pepsi, from old bottles and coolers to signs and even Pepsi earrings. You can see his collection throughout his man cave and garage. The Toronto Blue Jays was another love for Kenny, he would talk about them any chance he got and never missed a game. Go Jays!
To quote Frank Sinatra; And now, the end is near. And so I face the final curtain. My friend, I'll say it clear, I'll state my case of which I'm certain, I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and every highway, and more, much more than this, I did it my way. Yes it was my way.
