Grace Bergsma

It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Grace (Geessienna) Bergsma (nee Drent) of at Miramichi lodge in Pembroke. She passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026 in her 91st year. Grace was born in Oude Pekela, Groningen, Netherlands. In May 1953, Grace moved to Canada with her parents and four siblings. Grace and Rudolph Bergsma were married on Nov. 14, 1958 in Pembroke. For a period time, they lived in Ottawa and in 1971 they move to the Pembroke area. She is predeceased by her parents Jan & Geessienna Drent (nee Heikens), and predeceased by her brothers Bill (late Emmy), Egbert (Jantina) and John (Betty). Survived by her sister Jantina Vander Velde (late Stanley).

Beloved wife of 68 years to Rudolph Bergsma, whom she married on Nov. 14, 1958 at the Zion Christian Reformed Church in Pembroke. Loving mother of Alexander (Gloria), Evonne, Barry (Rita), Helen McWhirter (Ronald), Jeffrey (Shirley) and Roger (Christine).

Cherished grandmother to 13 grandchildren: Karen van Dijk (Antony), the late Laura Bergsma, Stefaan Dutil, Patrique Dutil, Dominique Dutil, Lindsay Oosterhof (Steve), Kyle Bergsma, Rachel Scholman (Ben), Tyler McWhirter, Bryan McWhirter, Megan McWhirter, Jared Bergsma, Anize Bergsma, Jake Schulz-Nicholson, and Skyler Bergsma. She was blessed with 10 great grandchildren.

Grace had strong faith and was dedicated member of the Zion Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, working in her flower beds, baking and sewing. She devoted her life to God, her church, and her family.

Visitation will be held at the Malcolm Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home, 141 Renfrew St., Pembroke on Tuesday July 28, 2026 from 7pm till 9pm.

Wake and Funeral Service will be held at the Zion Christian Reformed Church, 152 Drive-in Rd., Pembroke on Wednesday July 29, 2026. The Wake starting at 10am with the funeral service to follow at 11 am. A private burial will be held at the Beachburg Union Cemetery.
